Emotional Support, Self-Doubt and Your Work Environment

work environment

I started this blog with the intention of sharing my knowledge and inspire you to keep going with your online business or any dream you wish to pursue, and as a result to hopefully move you one step or a few steps closer to your goals.

It’s my hub where I provide you with words of encouragement and emotional support — a place where you can go to if you want to learn from someone who was in your shoes and showing you that if I (a guy who used to work at a grocery store) can do it, you can too.

I created this blog to not just share about Internet marketing strategies, but to also inform you of what sort of things to expect when you start pursuing your entrepreneurial dream.

With that said, I’d like to dig into emotional support, self-doubt, your work environment and dealing with negativity.

Your Work Environment

Working from home and on your own business can get lonely.

If you’re currently in the workforce, it’ll feel like a massive transition from being surrounded by work colleagues to the sound of silence.

People ask me “How do you stay motivated working from home?”

Personally, I have no problems working from home. I guess being an introvert that I am makes working from home a benefit.

To motivate yourself, you need to ask yourself the big “Why?“. What makes you get up every morning? What is your higher purpose?

The reality is, there’s only so many self-help and motivation books and articles you can read but unless you have a big reason why you’re doing it and then getting the right emotional support, you will end up staring at the wall and procrastinate without any motivation to put things into motion.

A few tips to creating a good work environment:

  • Working from home has its benefits like working in your pajamas, but treat your business just like any other business.

  • Create a schedule for yourself to follow so you don’t end up wondering what to do. I usually write a list of goals I want to accomplish for the week on Sunday night so that it’s prepared and I just simply follow it.

  • Cut distractions. When it’s crunch time, it’s crunch time. Do whatever it takes so that you can work without any interruptions. People also need to respect your time during your work hours.

Emotional Support And The Feeling of Doubt

I want to take a step back and explain more on emotional support.

I may seem like a person who’s “got it all figured out”, but deep inside I do have times when I feel down, de-motivated and doubts start to run through my head. I begin to think negative thoughts like:

“This isn’t working.”

“I feel like I’m working so hard and not seeing any results.”

“I wish there was an easier way.”

You reach a plateau and just stop believing in yourself.

At times like this, I have people around who are there to support me and get me back on my feet. It helps to be surrounded by people who believe in you and what you’re doing.

It never used to be like that. I always thought that I could do it all on my own, but I was wrong.

My fiance is my biggest supporter. We sit down to think about what we’re grateful for at the present moment, asses the situation, reflect back on why I’m doing what I’m doing, and then work out a plan.

A mastermind group or support group will also help you through your journey. You’re not only being surrounded by people who understand and can relate to your problems, they are also there to keep you accountable. If you aren’t part of a mastermind group either join one or start your own. If you’re having trouble, places like Meetup.com offer groups you can join or start based around your interests.

I have a group on Skype where we regularly talk about online business and just be there to help each other. It’s great fun too.

Surround Yourself With Positive People

surround yourself with positive people

Hanging out with Yaro Starak of Entrepreneurs-Journey.com and Justin Teoh of SocialVideoHub.com

You can be in a positive state instantly just by thinking and talking about positive things and surrounding yourself with positive people.

On the contrary, if you’re surrounded by negative people then you know how unpleasant it can be.

Negative people are often very self-centered, pessimistic and controlling. They will see the worst in everything and have a thousand reasons why things won’t work out.

One thing that’s important if you’re trying to make it as an entrepreneur is to not let negative people affect and put you down. You will get people who won’t believe in what you’re doing, and that’s fine. Learn to avoid the negativity. Being defensive about it will only convince them more of their thoughts and give them a morale boost. If things don’t go their way, they will blame you, the society and other people around them.

Your life is shaped by what you think. If you think negative thoughts, you’ll get negative results. As simple as that.

Rather than spending your time with negative people, spend it with positive people. Actively build relationships with positive people. When you spend more time with optimistic people, you’ll build good vibes and they’ll reassure you of your beliefs.

Remember that your life is yours to lead and it’s your choice to decide where you want it to go.

What Are Your Thoughts?

Have you encountered negative people who are against what you’re doing?

Who do you find are your biggest supporters?

  1. Hi Aurelius,

ALLELUIA! Discarding or managing negative people is a lifelong challenge. I think we just accept that we have no choice. I lived much of my life like that.

Your email was compelling about the call with your friend that drained you. Not an easy decision to give a friendship up even when it is draining.

With this business, sometimes the negative people aren’t all negative, just negative about an online business.

I have a good friend (that I respect and really like as a person) that would continually discourage me.
She believed that everyone was scam artist, no one can be trusted, they don’t really make money, no one cares, they just want your money, etc.

Finally I told her that I couldn’t discuss it with her anymore because she was too discouraging and it was hard enough for me to believe.

She actually understood and said she was trying to protect me.

I know that wasn’t true, I don’t need protecting. I think it is too hard for her to believe I could ever break out of the the “worker bee” life style.

I dont know if I can, but I am not giving up.

Oh, I like the picture of your positive trio. Thanks for the blog. A mastermind group is a good concept but seems like such a stretch right now.

    1. Yeah, I agree with you on that, that some people are only negative about an online business, jumping into conclusions that they think it’s a “scam”. They’ve already told themselves a story of how they perceive an online business.

The people that are scammers do make us (the better half), look bad and gives the online community a bad name.

There’s really only so much you can tell with someone who’s not willing to understand.

It’s good that you have the “not giving up” attitude. It’s a good trait if you want to run a successful business.

    2. Hi Mary
I’ve similar friends who are always negative to those things that are unknown to them. For example, some of them often tell me that making money online is scam. It’s true that there are lots of scammers out there but few ethic marketers like myself and Aurelius Tjin:)

  2. Thanx Aurelius,
It’s good to have some positive input and reinforcement from time to time.
It is always enjoyable to read your blogs and much can be gained from them.
Again thank you very much and please keep up the good work it is much appreciated.

    1. Positive reinforcement is what I wanted to put across, yes. At times, some of us just need a refresher and to stop and think why we’re doing what we’re doing.

Thanks for your words of encouragement.

  3. You’re so right! More than 35 years ago, I read a book by Dale Carnegie, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” In the very first chapter he makes your point, from the point of view of someone wanting to gain influence.

Negativity, nay-Sayers, hyper-critical people all shoot themselves (and those around them) in the foot. I am constantly amazed by how many people who should be supportive (and try) do so from a negative position.

You’re right on point. Keep it up!

  4. Hi Aurelius,

Yes I have to deal with someone who has a very negative attitude to what I do in my online business. Unfortunately, it’s not someone I can avoid or do without either. My wife firmly believes that all online marketing is a scam and that by doing it I am only scamming others. It is at the point where I have to do my marketing activities elsewhere rather than home, which is slowing my pace of development considerably. Nothing I can say will ever change her mind.
But I will soldier on. I have a Belief, with a capital ‘B’ and I will succeed.
    Regards,

    Steven Lucas

    1. Hi Steven. I’m sorry to hear that. Not everyone will agree with what you’re doing, but you can’t please them all. You can only prove them wrong and use their negativity to fuel your desire to want it even more. I back you up 100% on what you’re saying and believe you will succeed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  5. Amen to avoiding negative situations and negative people – I personally have encountered many negative people over the past five years who have been against my efforts of building an online business but there is one person who I can’t avoid and who by times can be very negative – ME. 🙂

I work on this each week and sometimes I win and other times it takes over my life BUT every time I am up to bat I am determined to win.

My wife and older children are my biggest supporters along with an online group I am involved with.

I work hard at my projects as I am determined to make positive changes in my families future as I believe we become what we think.

    Thanks for sharing Aurelius.

    1. Hi Aurelius,

I do agree with you about being with positive people especially in these days, its hard to stay focus at times. But I do believe people have choices in being negative or positive I choose to be positive.

Some people see me at times at work and at the gym to be over positive but I tell someone has to do it!! I know that reading books has been a great help for me. But with anything it takes work.

So Aurelius thanks again and have nice day.

    2. Keep up the winning attitude, Carl. It’s great to hear that your family support you in your venture. They can be your biggest inspirations too.

You have been a great supporter of mine, too. I appreciate that.

  6. Hi Aurelius,

Thank you for sharing your positive feedback! I definitely believe that we feed off the energy we are surrounded by. I know I have experienced being around people so negative that you instantly feel the life being sucked out of you when they enter the room. That type of negative energy can definitely weigh you down over time. I guess the key there is to not allow it to weigh you down. Thank you again Aurelius for providing this positive format!

Yes, it is sometimes hard to get into the habit of being productive. Once you’ve built some momentum, it’s all about keeping on going!

Thanks for stopping by the blog.

  8. This is a really good post and I believe what you say is true. When you hang around negative people, you are letting them steal your power from you. Procrastination will happen next. One of my mentors had a saying “Procrastination is the thief of profits.”

Procrastination is indecision and it stagnates people and this is where personal development will help them. I agree that being in a mastermind group is a step in the right direction. I will post an short excerpt on my blog with a link back to your article so more can see and read it.

You’re awesome Aurelius, keep up the great writing and encouraging words to help people earn money online.

    1. Thank you, Terri.

      Great quote.

Build those connections and relationships because it’s well-worth it. Where you’re weak, another would be strong at.

      1. Another mentor said this to me and it is so true “Live in your strengths and live in your passions.”

I agree that building relationships is the key to being successful online and offline.
